Trusts and Why You Need One
When faced with this question, or whether they have an “estate,” most people would say no but would be surprised to learn that they do have an estate and benefit from this important planning.
General Rule: If you have an estate valued at over $166,250, you should have a trust.
If you have a net worth of at least $166,250, have real estate, or have very specific instructions on how and when you want your estate to be distributed among your heirs after you die, then a trust could be for you. Trusts are also great for minimizing estate taxes or protecting your estate from lawsuits and creditors.
Trusts can be a powerful tool to help you accomplish a wide range of goals during your lifetime and long after. Like the rest of your estate and financial plan, you’ll need to periodically revisit your strategy with your attorney to ensure alignment with your current situation, goals, and laws.
